Narva
Narva is a border city on the Narva river, facing the Russian fortress of Ivangorod, with Hermann Castle on the Estonian bank and a largely rebuilt centre. Russian is the language of the street. The castle and the river view are the visit; the border is a state crossing, not a promenade.
What to see
Hermann Castle
Hermann Castle is the medieval fortress on the Estonian bank, a museum of the city’s history with the river and Ivangorod’s walls in the same view. The tower is the lookout. You are still in Estonia. The opposite bank is Russia, and stepping onto it is a border crossing with passport rules, not part of the stroll.

River view to Ivangorod
From the Estonian bank below the castle you look straight at Ivangorod’s fortress across a narrow river. It is one of the starker borders in Europe, and it is a view, not an invitation. Stay on the Estonian paths. Do not treat the bridge as a sightseeing shortcut; it is an international checkpoint.

Swedish Lion
The Swedish Lion is a monument on the road by the castle, marking the 1700 battle in which the Swedish army defeated a much larger Russian force outside Narva. It is a short stop on the way to the gate. The sculpture is the explanation; the museum inside the castle carries the longer story.

The baroque town hall on Raekoja plats is one of the few old civic buildings that survived in a centre otherwise rebuilt after the war. The square around it is quiet compared with Tallinn. It is worth the short walk from the castle to see what the pre-war street line tried to be.

The Dark Garden is the old park west of the centre, trees and a quieter walk when the castle wind is enough. It is a local park, not a designed attraction with a gate. Use it as the green half-hour of a short city, then return to the river.

Rondeel
Rondeel is the restaurant in a round bastion of Hermann Castle, the meal that belongs to the visit. The room is stone and the menu is a castle kitchen, not a capital tasting room. It can be closed on a quiet weekday; check before you assume lunch after the tower.

Muna is a café the town uses, a simpler room than the castle restaurant and the practical stop for coffee and a light meal near the centre. Treat the exact door on Koidula as something to confirm on the day; small cafés here move more often than fortresses. If this one has paused, the next busy room on the same street is the right idea.

The dining room at Hotel Inger is the dependable hotel meal in the centre, open when smaller cafés have finished. The cooking is a hotel kitchen. Use it on a Sunday or after a late train. It will not surprise you, and that is why it is on this list.

Hotel King keeps a restaurant for its guests and for the town, a second sure table if Inger is full. It is central and ordinary in the best sense. Confirm the evening service in the quiet months; border towns do not keep late kitchens for a slow Tuesday.

Hotel Inger
Hotel Inger on Puškini is the main central hotel, a practical base for the castle and the station. It is not a design hotel. The desk is used to travellers who have one night and a train. Ask for a quiet room; the street is a working street.

Hotel Narva is the other established central hotel, smaller than a city tower and enough for the one night the castle asks. Check the current standard when you book; houses here have been refitted in steps. You can walk to the town hall.

Hotel King sits in the central grid, a straightforward hotel with its own restaurant. It suits a short stay built around the fortress. As with the others, confirm the booking by email; walk-in assumptions are thin outside summer weekends.

Astri Keskus
Astri Keskus is the shopping centre on the Tallinn road, where the city buys ordinary goods. It is the practical mall, not a craft market. Use it if you need a pharmacy or a supermarket before the train. The castle quarter will not supply that.

The town market is the local trade in produce and household goods, plain and busier in the morning. It tells you more about daily Narva than the museum shop. Go early. This is not a place for Baltic souvenirs arranged for a coach party.

Puškini tänav
Puškini is the central shopping street, ordinary shops and the hotels, rebuilt rather than medieval. Walk it between the station side and the town hall. The interesting streetscape of Narva is the castle and the river, not this pavement, but this is where the town buys a coat.

Narva railway station
The station is the rail link with Tallinn, a ride of a little over two hours on the main east line, and the calmest way in. It is a working station near the southern edge of the centre. The castle is a walk or a short taxi, not on the platform.

Coaches stop by the railway, the alternative when the train time does not fit, including links toward Tartu and the north-east. The two stations are close enough to change on foot. As everywhere on this line, a Friday seat is worth buying before you see the platform.

Via Tallinn Airport
Narva has no passenger airport. Fly to Tallinn and continue by train, which is the connection to protect in your booking. The border with Russia is not a back door into the visit: crossing it is a separate international journey, with queues and rules that change. This guide stays on the Estonian bank.
