Pärnu, Estonia

Pärnu

Pärnu is Estonia’s summer capital, a small port with a long beach, a wooden old town, and a mud-bath tradition that outlived the empire that built it. Out of season the town shrinks to its cafés and the wind. The bus from Tallinn is the ordinary arrival.

What to see

Pärnu Beach, Pärnu

Pärnu Beach

The beach is a long, shallow Baltic shore south of the centre, with a promenade, pine shade, and water that stays cold. In July it is the reason the town exists for visitors. Lifeguards work the main stretch in season. The walk from the old town takes about twenty minutes, or a short bus.

Rannahoone

Rannahoone is the white beach pavilion of the late 1920s, a functionalist hall at the edge of the sand and the clearest building of Pärnu’s resort years. You can read the architecture from the promenade. What happens inside depends on the season’s programme.

Tallinn Gate, Pärnu

Tallinn Gate

The Tallinn Gate is the remaining seventeenth-century gate of the old bastions, a white baroque portal at the north edge of the old town. It is a five-minute look, and it explains that Pärnu was a fortress before it was a beach. The rampart park beside it is the better walk.

Pärnu Museum, Pärnu

Pärnu Museum

Pärnu Museum, in a historic house on Aida, tells the port, the resort, and the region without asking for a whole afternoon. It is the indoor hour when the beach wind is up. The building sits inside the small old-town grid, easy to add to a walk between the gate and the river.

Ammende Villa, Pärnu

Ammende Villa

Ammende Villa is a 1905 merchant’s house on Mere puiestee, art nouveau wood and stone, now a hotel and the most deliberate piece of architecture in the resort. You can read the exterior from the street. The restaurant and the rooms are the way inside. It is a short walk from the old town, not on the sand.

Trahter Postipoiss

Postipoiss is the old coaching inn of Pärnu, a tavern on Vee that has traded on that history for a long time. The room is rustic on purpose. It is the sit-down Estonian meal in the centre, stronger on atmosphere than on experiment. In summer, book.

Steffani

Steffani is Pärnu’s own pizza house, a local name with more than one door and a reputation that belongs to the town rather than to a capital chain. The Nikolai branch is the central one to aim for. It is a family meal, not a tasting menu. Queues in July are normal.

Supelsaksad

Supelsaksad, on Nikolai, is a restaurant in a historic house, named with the old word for the resort visitors who came to bathe. It is a proper table in the old town. The terrace works when the wind drops. Confirm the evening; small rooms here keep seasonal hours.

Ammende restaurant

The restaurant in the Ammende Villa is the formal meal of Pärnu, in the art nouveau house rather than on the sand. Book it for a slow dinner. It is a hotel dining room with a better building than most. In the quiet months, check that the kitchen is open before you walk across.

Where to stay

Restaurants and hotels change hands. These listings were last checked on 26 October 2026.

Villa Ammende

Staying at Villa Ammende means a night in the 1905 house itself, with a garden and a short walk to the old town. It is the special hotel of Pärnu, small and booked out in July. It is not on the beach. If the building is the reason you came, this is the room.

Illustrated plate for Hedon Spa & Hotel. This is not a photograph of the place.

Hedon Spa & Hotel

Hedon is the large spa hotel at the beach end of the promenade, the full-service stay when the point of the trip is the sand and a pool. It is modern. The old town is a walk or a short ride back. In high summer the spa fills with people who booked the water, not the lanes.

Rannahotell

Rannahotell is the beach hotel beside the historic pavilion, a resort house that puts the promenade at the door. It is smaller in spirit than Hedon and closer to the sand. Ask for a room toward the sea, and accept that a July Saturday will be social.

Shopping

Rüütli, Pärnu

Rüütli

Rüütli is the pedestrian shopping street of the old centre, linen, design, and cafés in low houses. Out of season some doors rest. It is the walk you do between the museum and the river, not a mall with a roof.

Pärnu market

The town market is the morning place for berries, flowers, and smoked fish, more like a Baltic summer town than the beach boutiques. Go early in July, when the produce is the point. It will not look like a postcard, which is why it is useful.

Illustrated plate for Port Artur. This is not a photograph of the place.

Port Artur

Port Artur is the shopping centre locals use, on the edge of the centre, for groceries and ordinary shops when the pedestrian street is selling only linen. It is not a sight. It is the place that keeps a beach weekend supplied.

How to get there

Illustrated plate for Pärnu bus station. This is not a photograph of the place.

Pärnu bus station

The bus station is the real gate. Coaches from Tallinn take a little over two hours and are frequent in summer; Riga is a longer direct ride. There is no regular passenger train to count on. Buy a return before a Sunday evening in July.

Pärnu Airport, Pärnu

Pärnu Airport

Pärnu Airport, a few kilometres inland, is a small field. Scheduled passenger flights, when they exist, are seasonal and few. Do not build a trip on them without checking the week you travel. The reliable air gate is Tallinn, then the coach.

Via Tallinn Airport

For a sure arrival, fly to Tallinn and take a coach from the city’s bus station to Pärnu. The road is direct. Leave more than the theoretical two hours if your flight lands late; Sunday returns fill. The Pärnu bus station is in town, so the last step is short.
