Tartu
Tartu is Estonia’s university town on the Emajõgi, a small centre of lecture halls, a ruined cathedral on the hill, and a town hall square that students treat as a living room. It is quieter than Tallinn and more interested in its own life.

What to see
University of Tartu main building
The white university building closes the end of Ülikooli, a neoclassical front from the early nineteenth century and the symbol of the town. The hall inside is shown on a guided look rather than as a free museum. The square in front is where the city gathers.

Toomemägi cathedral ruins
Toomemägi is the hill park above the centre, with the brick ruins of the medieval cathedral and the university’s old observatory among the trees. It is a walk, not a ticketed site for the park itself. The choir of the ruin holds a museum; the hill is the larger pleasure.

The town hall on Raekoja plats is a small neoclassical building with the fountain of the kissing students in front of it, a city joke that became the meeting point. The square is the evening room of Tartu. The building itself is civic; the life is outside.

AHHAA Science Centre
AHHAA, by the river in the new commercial quarter, is a hands-on science centre and the family sight of Tartu. It is modern, ticketed, and built for a few hours. The old university is a different kind of learning, ten minutes’ walk away.

St. John’s is a brick church extraordinary for the terracotta figures set into its walls, restored after heavy war damage. It sits just off the main square. The exterior is the rare thing; step in if the door is open, but the sculptures are the visit.

Café Werner
Café Werner on Ülikooli has served cakes and coffee in Tartu since the late nineteenth century, in a room that students and professors still treat as a civic institution. It is a café, not a late kitchen. Go for pastry and the feeling of a town that kept one address.

Püssirohukelder, the old gunpowder cellar on the slope of Toomemägi, is a vaulted beer restaurant that has been a Tartu address for decades. The room is a brick cavern. The food is hearty pub cooking. It is the evening that belongs to the hill.

Antonius, in the small hotel of the same name on Ülikooli, is the formal dining room of the university street. It is a place to book when Werner’s cakes are not enough and you want a tablecloth. The hotel and the restaurant share a door; say which you mean.

Vilde ja Vine, in a cellar on Vallikraavi below the hill, is a long-running wine restaurant of Tartu. It is quieter than the square and more of a dinner than a student bar. The name nods to the writer Eduard Vilde. Book on a weekend.

Hotel Barclay
Hotel Barclay stands on Ülikooli, in the middle of the street that runs from the town hall toward the university. It is a straightforward central hotel. You can walk to the hill, the square, and Werner without a taxi.

Hotel London is a small hotel on Rüütli, the pedestrian lane just off the square. The location is the luxury: you step out into the evening room of the town. Rooms are modest. Light sleepers should ask what is under the window on a Thursday.

Antonius Hotel is a small house hotel on the university street, with the restaurant of the same name downstairs. It is the quieter formal stay, closer to a guesthouse in scale than to a tower. Book early in term time; the town fills with conferences.

Tasku
Tasku is the central shopping centre by the bus station and the river, the practical place for ordinary shops when the old streets are only selling books and coffee. It is a mall. The town’s character is back on Ülikooli and around the market.

The market on Soola is the morning trade in produce and flowers, a short walk from the bus station. It is plainer than the square and more like the town that lives here. Go before lunch. Indoor halls keep a few counters when the open yard is thin.

Rüütli is the pedestrian lane of small shops, design, and cafés running off the town hall square. It is short. The pleasure is the density, not a single famous store. In term time it belongs to students after four.

Tartu bus station
The bus station next to Tasku is the frequent link with Tallinn, about two and a half hours, and often the simpler arrival than the train. Coaches also run toward Pärnu and the south. You step out almost in the centre.

The railway station is west of the centre, across a slightly dull stretch, with trains to Tallinn and toward the eastern line for Narva connections. It is a real station, not a halt. A bus or a twenty-minute walk brings you to the square. Check the timetable; coaches are sometimes simply more often.

Via Tallinn Airport
Tartu has a small airfield with occasional flights, not a dependable international airport. The normal arrival is Tallinn Airport, then a coach from the city bus station. Do not plan a tight connection from a late flight; the last bus is not a courtesy.
