Jūrmala
Jūrmala is a string of beach resorts along the Gulf of Riga, pine woods behind a long sand shore and wooden houses with carved eaves. Majori and Dzintari are the part most visitors mean. The train from Riga is the sensible way in.
What to see
Jomas iela
Jomas iela is the pedestrian spine of Majori, a long walk of cafés, wooden villas, and small shops between the station and the dune. It is the town’s main room. The beach is one block toward the water, through the pine shade.

The Dzintari hall is the resort’s summer stage, a concert shell among pines a short walk from the beach. The building matters most when a festival is on. On an ordinary afternoon it is a landmark you walk past toward the water.

Ķemeri, at the western end of Jūrmala, is a bog and forest park with boardwalks and a decayed spa grandeur around the old hotel. It is a different day from the Majori beach. Wear shoes that can take wet timber.

Jūrmala City Museum
The city museum on Tirgoņu iela tells the resort’s story: bathing, wooden villas, and the years when this shore was a Soviet dacha coast. It is a small indoor hour when the wind off the gulf is too much for the dune.

The beach at Majori is a wide Baltic shore, white sand, a wooden promenade, and cold water even in July. Lifeguard towers work in season. The dune path back to Jomas iela is the return most people take.

36.line
36.line is the seafood restaurant people in Riga name when they mean a proper fish meal in Jūrmala, set toward the beach in Majori. The name comes from the numbered line of the resort grid. Book in July; the room is small for the reputation.

Pegasa Pils is a wooden fantasy of a house on Jūras iela, built as a restaurant and hotel and still the most theatrical building on the dune side of Majori. Eat here for the room and the resort atmosphere. The kitchen is a hotel kitchen, not a destination on its own.

Lido’s Jūrmala branch follows the same idea as the Riga hall: a counter of Latvian dishes, you choose, you sit. It is the dependable family meal when the beach has gone on too long. Look for the current door on Lienes iela; the chain moves fittings more often than the idea.

The cafés along Jomas iela are the everyday meal of the resort: coffee, cake, and a terrace under the wooden eaves. No single room has held the street for a century, so treat the row as the address and pick a terrace that is actually open. In winter many doors rest.

Baltic Beach Hotel
Baltic Beach Hotel is the large spa hotel on the dune at Majori, with the beach on one side and Jomas iela a short walk on the other. It is the full-service stay of the resort. In high summer the lobby belongs to wedding parties as much as to guests with sand in their shoes.

Hotel Jūrmala SPA stands on Jomas iela itself, so the pedestrian street is the front door and the beach is still close. It has worked this corner of Majori for years. Ask whether your room faces the street; summer evenings carry music.

Semarah Hotel Lielupe sits further east, by the Lielupe river mouth, a large hotel used for conferences as much as for beach weekends. It is quieter than Majori’s spine and a longer walk to Jomas iela. The station at Lielupe is the arrival if you are not driving.

Shops on Jomas iela
The shops on Jomas iela sell amber, linen, and the ordinary needs of a beach day. It is a resort high street, not a department store. Prices follow the season. The interesting part is the wooden street itself, not any one window.

The market at Dubulti is the local food market of western Jūrmala, a practical place for fruit, bread, and flowers rather than souvenirs. It is a train stop west of Majori. Go before noon; stalls thin out after lunch.

Behind Jomas iela, Lienes iela carries the ordinary shops and the small centres that keep a beach town supplied: groceries, a pharmacy, a place to replace a towel. Use it when the pedestrian street is only selling linen shirts.

Majori station
Majori station is the stop for the heart of the resort, on the electrified line from Riga. Trains are frequent in summer and still the best way in, because the coast road clogs. From the platform you walk straight into Jomas iela.

Riga Airport
Jūrmala has no airport of its own. Riga Airport is the arrival, then a taxi along the coast or a train via central Riga to Majori. In summer the coast road from the airport can be slow. The train is the more predictable second half.

Minibuses run between Riga and the Jūrmala stops on Lienes iela when you miss the train or your bags are awkward on a suburban carriage. They use the coast road, so a Friday evening can sit in traffic the train has already passed. The railway is the first choice.
