Liepāja

Liepāja is Latvia’s western port, a windy city with a famous organ, a long beach, and the old naval quarter of Karosta out along the shore. It feels further from Riga than the map suggests. Coaches, not a frequent train, are the ordinary way in.

What to see

Illustrated plate for Holy Trinity Cathedral. This is not a photograph of the place.

Holy Trinity Cathedral

Holy Trinity holds one of the largest mechanical organs in the world, in a bright baroque hall a few streets from the canal. Come for a concert if one is listed; the instrument is the reason the church is known beyond Latvia. Between recitals the nave is still worth the door.

Karosta Prison, Liepāja

Karosta Prison

Karosta Prison is a naval jail in the old military town north of the centre, open as a museum and, if you book it, as a place to stay the night in a cell. The tour is blunt about the Soviet years. It is a tram or taxi from the beach, not a stroll from the cathedral.

St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral, Liepāja

St. Nicholas Naval Cathedral

The golden-domed naval cathedral rises over Karosta, an Orthodox church built for the imperial fleet and still the landmark you see before the prison gates. The quarter around it is half-empty brick and sea wind. Pair it with the prison rather than with a swim.

Illustrated plate for Liepāja Beach. This is not a photograph of the place.

Liepāja Beach

The city beach runs along Kūrmājas prospekts, a wide Baltic shore with a promenade, a pier, and wind that does not negotiate. Summer lifeguards cover the main stretch. It is the reason families stay an extra day after the organ and the fortress.

Liepāja Museum

The city museum in a villa on the way to the beach keeps local history, including the port and the years as a closed naval town. It is a compact visit. The walk afterward toward the sand is the better half of the outing.

Pica Lulū

Pica Lulū is the pizza room Liepāja treats as its own, a local name on the pedestrian streets rather than a capital-city import. Go when you want a casual meal after the beach. It is not a formal dining room, and that is the point.

Illustrated plate for Fontaine Palace. This is not a photograph of the place.

Fontaine Palace

The restaurant at Fontaine Palace, on Jūras iela toward the concert garden, is a settled hotel dining room with a terrace when the wind allows. It suits a slower meal than the pizza street. In winter confirm the evening service; resort kitchens shorten.

Promenade Hotel restaurant

The dining room at the Promenade Hotel looks toward the canal and the port edge, and it is the reliable sit-down meal in the centre when you want a table rather than a counter. The kitchen is a hotel kitchen. Book if you are here on a summer Saturday.

Cafés on Tirgoņu iela

Tirgoņu iela and the lanes off it are the café walk of the old centre, cake and coffee in low houses rather than a single famous room. Choose a place with people in it after three. Winter hours are shorter than the summer terraces suggest.

Promenade Hotel

Promenade Hotel faces the canal on Vecā ostmala, the comfortable central stay with the old town on one side and a walk toward the port on the other. It is the straightforward full-service choice. Rooms on the water are the ones to ask for.

Hotel Fontaine

Hotel Fontaine stands by the concert garden and the way to the beach, a smaller hotel than the Promenade and closer to the sand. It suits a stay that is about the shore. The garden next door is public; your sleep still hears a festival if one is on.

Art Hotel Roma

Art Hotel Roma sits by Rožu Square, a small hotel in the pedestrian grid and a useful base when you want the cathedral and the cafés on foot. It is not a beach hotel. Confirm the latest entrance on the square; the block has been refitted.

Shopping

Illustrated plate for Zivju iela. This is not a photograph of the place.

Zivju iela

Zivju iela is the pedestrian shopping street, low and walkable, with clothes, amber, and the pizza rooms mixed in. It is the centre’s high street. Do not expect a department store; the point is the short street itself.

Illustrated plate for Liepāja market. This is not a photograph of the place.

Liepāja market

The market by Kuršu Square is the morning trade in fruit, flowers, and smoked fish, plainer and more useful than the souvenir windows. Go early. By mid-afternoon the interesting stalls have packed.

Illustrated plate for Baata. This is not a photograph of the place.

Baata

Baata is the shopping centre north of the old grid, where the city buys ordinary goods when the pedestrian street is not enough. Use it for a supermarket or a pharmacy. It will not tell you anything about the port.

How to get there

Liepāja bus station, Liepāja

Liepāja bus station

The bus station is the real gate to the city. Coaches to Riga take roughly three and a half to four hours and are the connection to plan around. There is no frequent passenger train that replaces them. Buy a seat before a Friday.

Liepāja Airport, Liepāja

Liepāja Airport

Liepāja Airport, east of the city, has had scheduled flights, but they are few and they change. Do not assume a passenger service on the day you travel. For a reliable booking, fly to Riga and take the coach. Check the airport’s own list before you count on it.

Arrive via Riga

Most visitors reach Liepāja by coach from Riga, after a flight into Riga Airport or a train into Riga Central. A direct frequent railway to the coast is not the service to count on. Leave a margin between the flight and the bus; the coach station is in the city, not at the airfield.
