Klaipėda
Klaipėda is Lithuania’s seaport, a former Prussian town the old maps called Memel, with a half-timber old town on the Danė and a ferry to the Curonian Spit. The centre is small; the port and the beaches are the scale.
What to see
Theatre Square
Theatre Square is the old-town parlour, with the drama theatre and the small Ännchen statue that the city treats as its mascot. The Danė is one street away. This is the place to start, not a single monument to tick.

Little of the Teutonic castle remains above ground; the museum on Pilies Street explains the fortress and shows the excavated footprint by the Danė. It is a site more than a standing castle.

Lithuanian Sea Museum
The sea museum and dolphinarium occupy the old Nerija fort on the Smiltynė side of the lagoon, reached by the ferry from the old town. It is the city’s family-scale sight and the reason many people cross the water.

Clock and Watch Museum
A small museum of clocks in a timber house on Liepų Street is a quiet indoor hour when the port wind is up. The collection is the point; the house is a good example of the old town’s scale.

Sculpture Park
The sculpture park north of the theatre quarter was laid out on the site of an old cemetery, with granite works among the trees. It is a local walk, not a fenced attraction, and it explains the city’s habit of putting art in the open.

Meridianas
Meridianas is a restaurant aboard a historic sailing ship moored in the Danė by the old town. The ship is a city symbol; the kitchen is a harbour restaurant, strongest when you want fish and the deck rather than a quiet room.

Katpėdėlė Memelis occupies an old warehouse on the Danė and cooks a hearty Lithuanian menu under the Katpėdėlė name, a chain with a long local history. The room and the river are the reason to pick this branch.

Senoji Hansa is an old-town restaurant at Kurpių Street, with a terrace toward the river quarter. It is a straightforward place for a sit-down meal in the centre. Hours and the menu move; the address has been stable.

Švyturys is the city’s historic brewery name, and the BHouse on Kūlių Vartų Street is the place attached to that beer. Go for the local lager and a casual meal, not for a formal dining room. Confirm it is open on the day you cross town.

The market streets around Turgaus are where the city buys food, with stalls rather than a single hall. Go in the morning. It is ordinary and local, which is the interest.
